A star is born, Nonito Donaire

Photo by Dr Ed De La Vega

Las Vegas – Nonito “ The Filipino Flash” Donaire stunned 4805 in attendance at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Saturday night when he stopped a Mexican champion, Fernando Montiel (44-3-2,34KO’S) with a breathtaking one punch left hook in the second round of a championship bout that was scheduled for twelve. Donaire won WBO and WBC bantamweight titles. Fernando Montiel was sent to the hospital for observations. No one in the arena complained that the fight was too short.

Nonito dominated the first round pressing the action, taller faster slicker it was all going his way. Action got more competitive in the second stanza as Mexican champion pressed forward until sudden and violent conclusion when Nonito countered a right hand with a blistering left hook that sent Montiel into a never never land.   Fernando Montiel never saw the punch and was out before he hit the canvass on which he laid listlessly with legs quivering. Miraculously, still out on his feet Montiel got up. Referee Russell Mora allowed the fight to go on and Nonito went for the kill landing two more clean blows that forced the ref to stop the contest at 2:25 of the second stanza. A spectacular left hook one punch knock out by Nonito Donaire was a pugilistic masterpiece that will be discussed by fans and pundits for years to come. “That was the hardest punch I ever threw in my life,” said Donaire at a post fight press conference;” I was really surprised he got up, because I put everything in that punch.”

When Nonito separated Vic Darchinyan from his senses and his title in 2007 with similar type of left hook, some pundits (Darchinyan included) exclaimed that it was a lucky punch. This time the jury is out with a verdict that Donaire’s left hook is a lethal weapon.” Darchinyan punch was pretty sweet,” said Donaire (26-1,18KO):” But this one was perfectly timed. I knew where he was going to be. It was the hardest punch ever.” But aside from obvious power it was a precision bomb that exploded right on the temple of unsuspecting Montiel and ended the night in dramatic fashion. “ I am still in shock!” exclaimed veteran trainer Rudy Hernandez hours after the fight.

In other action:

In a highly anticipated rematch Philadelphia welterweight Mike” Machine Gun” Jones defeated highly popular Mexican brawler Jesus Sot Karass by unanimous decision. After twelve bloody rounds all three judges scored it for Jones: 115-113,116-112,117-111.

Undefeated lightweight, former Olympian, Mickey Bey(16-0-1,8KO’S) from Cleveland , Ohio found himself in a very tough fight against a hard charging and punching prospect from Dallas, Texas, Jose Hernandez( 10-4-1,4KO’S)After eight hard fought rounds judges declared the fight a majority draw with Lisa Giampa scoring it 78-74 for Bey while two other judges had it 76-76 .

Welterweights Mark Melligen (21-2,14KO’S) from Philippines and Gabriel Martinez (27-2-1, 14 KO’S) staged a ten round war. All three judges scored it for Melligen: 99-91 twice and 98-92

After facing adversity in a form of left hook that almost dropped him on the seat of his pants Cuban welterweight prospect from Miami, Florida, Yordenis Ugas (6-0,3KO’S) out boxed Carlos Musquez (3-4-3,3 KO’S) from Sacramento, California over six rounds. All three judges scored it the same 60-54 in favor of Ugas.

Unbeaten light welterweight from Denver, Colorado, Mike Alvarado (29-0,21KO) stopped Englishman, Dean Harrison (16-5,5KO’S) within three rounds. Harrison’s corner ended the night at the conclusion of third stanza after their charge took a severe beating.

Pac-Man/Mosley Hype Kicks Off

It’s less than three months away, but because this is boxing, a three-city tour was kicked off last Thursday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hotel to promote the welterweight bout between Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

While some believe this matchup is unnecessary, and will be onesided in favor of the man headlining the event, there are always potential twists and turns.

“I’m excited to fight [May 7th],” said Pacquiao, who hasn’t lost since March 2005, when he faced Erik Morales. “I hope more boxing fans will watch this fight because this is a good fight.”

We’ll see, but the early 7-to-1 odds say Pacquiao, hailed as the finest pugilist on the planet, will prevail easily, and this speaks volumes about the 39-year-old Mosley, a sure Hall of Famer, who began his storied career in 1993.

“I’ve had a couple of layoffs,” said Mosley, who will carry into the ring a record of 46-6-1 with 39 knockouts, and is 3 1/2 inches taller, with a 7 1/2 inch reach advantage. “I had a layoff before the [Antonio] Margarito fight. It’s interesting the way fights are.”

That bout in January 2009 at the Staples Center was vintage Mosley. From start to its conclusion via ninth-round knockout, Mosley was all over Margarito with body and head shots.

It was Margarito who earlier laid waste to the then undefeated Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

Mosley’s last two ring episodes were uninspired, earning a draw against Sergio Mora last September, and losing a unanimous decision to undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., in May 2010.

Those bouts have planted seeds of doubt about whether the four-time world champion in three weight classes can be competitive.

“This is very big and I’m excited,” said Mosley, who hails from Pomona. “It’s one of the biggest fights of my career, maybe the biggest. We’re both competitors.”

Top Rank President Bob Arum oversaw the affair and praised both men. “Styles make fights,” he said. “Shane knows Manny will come to him, and Manny is not going to hide. Shane will shine. Manny will shine. They will provide entertainment.”

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach doesn’t see the 12-round clash going the distance, but wasn’t about to predict what round it will end.

“We’re not going to look for a knockout,” he said, “but if it’s there, we’ll try for it. If we do, we’ll be the first to stop him, and that will be the icing on the cake.”

Roach said Pacquiao will train four weeks in the Philippines, and four weeks at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood.

“I look forward to this,” said Roach. “This is a whole new game plan. This is not an easy fight. If they think it’s going to be an easy fight, they’re foolish.”

Roach added: “He [Mosley] is a very intelligent fighter. I’m concerned about his speed and his power. He will fight the best fight of his life.”

Since Pacquiao’s last setback, he’s strung together an incredible 13 consecutive victories, and has been dominant, especially last year with lopsided decisions over Margarito and Joshua Clottey in Cowboys Stadium.

In 2009, Pacquiao (52-3-2 and 38 knockouts) had a 12th round technical knockout victory over Cotto in November, and floored Englishman Ricky Hatton in the second round in May.

“Shane Mosley is a great fighter and a champion,” said Pacquiao, who is 32 years old. “Good luck to both of us.”

Not one to brag, or put down an opponent, Pacquiao is well aware of the problems Mosley can pose.

“I will train hard for this fight,” he said. “I don’t want to disappoint the fans when they watch this fight. I pray no one gets hurt.”

Rising above the sport Manny Pacquiao says he doesn’t need Mayweather – Glendale boxing | Examiner.com

As if Sugar Shane Mosley wasn’t even there, group of reporters surrounded Manny Pacquiao asking questions about possible fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr.“If the fight happens it’s good for the fans,” said Pacquiao sporting a new hairdo:”If the fight not happens its ok, because I have already achieved a lot in boxing,” Considering my observations at Thursday’s Los Angeles kick off press conference that was set up to announce May7th welterweight showdown with Sugar Shane Mosley, congressman Manny Pacquiao seems to be right on the money about Mayweather.

First of all, a spacious ballroom at the Beverly Hills Hotel assigned to host a press conference featuring global super star, Manny Pacquaio was breaking at the seams jam packed with over three hundred mainstream sports and boxing media. Fire marshals were on hand to keep order and to make sure overflow did not reach maximum capacity at the renowned hotel. Last time I have seen such media frenzy was during Oscar De Hoya heydays.

“ I’m excited to be fighting on May 7 because it’s covered by Showtime and CBS,” said Pacquiao announcing his upcoming battle with former three division champion, Shane Mosley scheduled to take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas:” It’s going to give more boxing fans a chance to see the fight.” Having a major network such as CBS to help promote Manny Pacquiao fight was a brilliant idea. It might just be the first step in bringing boxing back to network television. Understanding the significance of this development, humble champion stated:” I want to thank CBS and Showtime for helping us.” CBS sports anchor Jim Hill was on hand to interview Pacquaio and Mosley, which is not a usual occurrence at boxing press conferences, but even more significant was that Les Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corporation was in attendance.

“We are not happy you’re (Pacquiao) back, we’re ecstatic,” said Bob Halloran, MGM Grand Sports Entertainment Director:” Globally the most popular fighter in the world is Manny.”

It’s Showtime Shawn Porter – Glendale boxing | Examiner.com

Hot, undefeated prospect Showtime Shawn Porter has gained more notoriety while sparring with pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao in Philippines in 2009 than through all of his seventeen pro fights combined. Freddie Roach picked Porter then because of his tremendous left hook that would help Manny prepare for the fight with Miguel Cotto. Roach praised Shawn by saying that he is a very strong fighter with a left hook sharper than Cotto’s and predicted that this young prospect will be a champion some day.

Reports that Shawn gave Pacquiao a run for his money in sparring did not go to his head. Instead he decided that if he wanted to get better he needed to move to Southern California to get better spar mates.
