“Rebecca” is the name stitched on the trunks of a light middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo. Cute as a button, the four year old daughter Rebecca is no stranger to the ring. While training at the Maywood Boxing Club, twenty seven year old father Angulo asked his trainer Clemente Medina to lace up her gloves. “She hits hard!” exclaimed Cesar, a friend appointed to watch Rebecca while Alfredo trains. She must have it in her genes; Angulo hits with force in both hands. Just watching Alfredo spar last week with Roberto Garcia and Freddie Hernandez was more exciting than observing most fights live. In a sport known as a sweet science, a boxer known as “ El Perro” lives up to his name by fighting with an uncompromised ferocity of a wild dog.
This Saturday, Mexicali prospect Angulo (17-1,14KO’S) is facing a young Colombian veteran banger, Joel Julio (35-3, 31 KO, S) at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. Twelve round contest for the interim WBO light middleweight title will be televised live on HBO Boxing after Dark as a co feature to a heavyweight bout between Chris Arreola and Tomasz Adamek. Considering the punching power of both combatants this is bound to be a firefight and a can’t miss affair.
After suffering the only loss of his professional career at the hands of Kermit Cintron last May in Florida, Angulo came back strong with two spectacular knock outs; stopping Gabriel Rosado in two last August and Harry Joe Yorgey in three last November. Angulo needs an impressive win against a dangerous big name puncher to assert his name among the elite of a hot super welterweight division. Julio, who lost two out of last three fights, needs a big win even more to remain relevant in the division.
A man of very few words, Angulo looked really sharp in sparring last week; putting powerful and fluid combinations together, driving his opponents back to the ropes. It almost looked like he was holding back from overwhelming his sparring partners. You can be sure he won’t hold back in the ring come April 24th. Just like in the ring, Angulo shows love for his daughter Rebecca with actions rather then words. Part time father, Angulo picks up his daughter every week from Mexicali, where Rebecca’s mom resides. Quickly becoming a fixture at the Southern California fight scene, because Angulo brings her to local fights , the cutest and the youngest fight observer is well taken care of. Rebecca is always dressed well and looks like she has just spent hours at the saloon getting her hair and nails done. So far the proud papa is doing a great job giving love to his daughter. Being raised by a single mom in poverty stricken section of Mexicali, Angulo fights to give his daughter a different life. Besting Joel Julio on April 24th will go a long way towards reaching that goal.
